Phase 1 Contractor appointed
The West Kentish Town Estate redevelopment team are pleased to announce that following a fully compliant procurement process, Higgins Partnerships have been chosen to be appointed for the contract to build phase 1 of the West Kentish Town Estate redevelopment.
Planning Permission Secured Over 300 New Council Homes
West Kentish Town Estate which is set to build 850 new homes, including 326 new council homes, was given the resolution to grant planning permission by Camden’s planning committee on Thursday 11 December 2025.
The redevelopment is set to replace outdated blocks with safe, modern, energy efficient, family-sized homes, complemented by neighbourhood improvements including new outdoor play and open spaces.
Over 850 homes, including at least 326 council homes, will be built in a phased approach alongside a new estate layout and improved public spaces.
The first phase will build 52 new homes, four of which are for returning leaseholders and 48 will be affordable council homes for returning council residents.
In a 2020 ballot with estate residents, 93 per cent of residents voted in favour of a full estate regeneration, with a turnout of almost 85 per cent, so this decision marks a major milestone.
"A third of families living on the estate are currently in overcrowded conditions, so this decision is a great step towards building the safer and larger homes our resident’s need. Over 90 per cent of residents voted in favour of the redevelopment - a clear mandate for change and what our residents want.
This redevelopment is set to deliver more than 850 new homes, including over 320 affordable council homes, alongside a range of improvements to the local area including new outdoor play areas and open spaces. This will make a huge difference for families currently living in overcrowded conditions and in need of spacious, new, good quality homes.
Throughout this journey, the scheme has been informed by residents. We have been working closely with residents for the past ten years about their experiences living on the estate, including overcrowding, access and repairs issues and no outdoor space for families. This redevelopment will enable us to address these concerns to ensure families can stay and thrive in Camden. We have also worked hard to ensure that our plans take on board and acknowledge concerns raised by residents in the estate’s neighbouring communities.
This redevelopment will bring huge benefits to the local community, and it is part of our ongoing commitment to building more much-needed homes to ease housing pressures and address the housing crisis in Camden and across London.
Councillor Nasrine Djemai, Cabinet Member for New Homes and Community Investment„
The West Kentish Town Estate redevelopment is set to be the largest project as part of Camden’s Community Investment Programme - the Council’s leading house building programme set to build 4,850 homes in the borough, of which 1,800 will be affordable council homes.
Three community members have joined a procurement panel that will select the contractor best fit for the project, ensuring local voices are involved in the process.

2-3 Degrees Young People Workshop
Youth engagement organisation 2-3 Degrees are supporting the project team to reach out, listen and collaborate with local young people.
The West Kentish Town estate redevelopment team have partnered with youth focused social
enterprise 2-3 degrees and educational architecture specialists Matt+Fiona on a project to co-design meanwhile use spaces with young residents of the West Kentish Town estate. The Build Better Programme has brought together a group of 14–19-year olds from the estate to design shared community spaces. Through a series of workshops, the group have worked together to come up with design concepts and translate their ideas into large-scale models. Young residents are taking an active role in shaping the redevelopment, learning more about careers in the built environment, and developing critical thinking and teamwork skills along the way. The designs will be worked into an installation to be revealed in the New Year

Reopened estate parking
Following your feedback, we are pleased to announce that the 3 larger estate parking spaces in the middle of the estate have now been re-opened. This reprovides over 40 parking spaces across Edington, Durston and Chelwood parking areas. If you would like to apply for a parking space, you will need to complete the estate parking application on our estate parking webpage.
WKTE garages demolition update
The garages at Athlone Street and Coity Road have been demolished. The Wedmore garages have been completed as far as it safe to do so, due to the obstruction of a wall and a tree.
All three garages sites will be secured with hoarding until we get planning approval, as these locations will be needed for the construction of new homes. We are exploring uses at the Coity Road site.
Whilst we look at the options available and delivery partners, we have decided to temporarily secure this site to stop any littering or anti social behaviour. We hope to transform this site into a community space where residents can come together to play and socialise. In the coming months, we want to collaborate closely with local residents to design this area and encourage suggestions in shaping the future of this space.
Latest workshop boards January 2024
Last Summer the Development Team presented proposals for the new homes at West Kentish Town Estate. Whilst we received many positive comments, residents had concerns about some parts of the plans.
The Development Team have been working hard with Masterplanners and Phase 1 architects since the Summer to find a way to deliver a scheme in response to the feedback received.
We are excited to be in a position to present these changes to all residents.
