State of the Borough: We Make Camden Missions

Camden’s Missions are long-term goals for the future of our borough that evolved from the work of Camden’s Renewal Commission and were developed in collaboration with people across Camden. We Make Camden identified four Missions.

Diversity Mission

By 2030, those holding positions of power in Camden are as diverse as our community – and the next generation is ready to follow.

This mission aims to ensure everyone in Camden has a real opportunity to influence decisions that affect their lives. It focuses on making leadership across local organisations more representative of Camden's diverse community, while equipping young people with the skills and confidence to become future leaders.

Food Mission

By 2030, everyone eats well every day with nutritious, affordable, sustainable food.

This mission aims to transform Camden's food system into one that is inclusive, resilient and sustainable – addressing food insecurity, healthy eating, children's nutrition, and environmental sustainability.

Youth Mission

By 2025, every young person has access to economic opportunity that enables them to be safe and secure.

This mission aims to ensure every young person, whatever their background, can access opportunities to feel safe, secure and able to succeed. It focuses on good jobs and training pathways, giving young people a voice, and providing supportive spaces for guidance and inspiration.

Estates and Neighbourhoods Mission

By 2030, Camden’s estates and their neighbourhoods are healthy, sustainable and unlock creativity.

Where we live has a big impact on health and wellbeing. A third of Camden's residents live in social rented housing, and they face significantly worse health outcomes than others. This mission works to reduce that gap through improving estate environments, building community connections, and addressing climate risks.

The State of the Missions

The State of the Missions is our annual public account of the Missions. This report brings together our reflections and learning from the Mission-focused work we’ve done in the borough and inside the Council.

We think about our learning across 3 levels:

  • individual projects – any intervention or activity in the borough that contributes towards our Mission goals. Each of these projects is about delivering outcomes but also serves as an experiment to test our assumptions about the Mission
  • individual Missions – each Mission has a portfolio of projects which collectively contribute towards the change we want to see. We try to bring together the learning from individual projects and other data sources to help us make good choices about where to prioritise resources
  • strategy – across the whole strategy, we want to continually improve our Missions’ way of working, using reflection on our own work, learning from Mission-oriented organisations and other evidence of what works
