ScootAbility personal mobility vehicle
If you have a mobility impairment, ScootAbility can lend you a personal mobility vehicle. For example, a scooter or power chair.
Membership
The 2 types of free membership are:
- day loan only - your property has a secure storage area, but no suitable charging facilities
- one-to-seven-day loan - your property is accessible for vehicle storage, has a secure storage area and charging facilities
Who can apply
To get a vehicle, you must:
- live in Camden or Islington
- be 16 years old or over
We deliver vehicles to and from your home if:
- your home is vehicle accessible, and
- you have suitable charging and storage facilities
How to apply
To apply:

You'll need:
- proof of your address, such as a council tax statement
- medical letters confirming a physical disability

Home assessment
Once you've applied, your application will be reviewed and you might be contacted to provide further evidence.
If your application is approved, we'll need to do a home assessment.
The home assessment will include:
- checking vehicle access and storage space
- advice on keeping your vehicle securely at your home if you can
- advice on the use of locking mechanisms, chains and padlocks
- checking there is somewhere to recharge the vehicle using indoor mains sockets. It costs a few pence to charge overnight

Face-to-face sessions
Our Concessionary Travel department hold face-to-face sessions every Tuesday at:
- 5 Pancras Square, Kings Cross, N1C 4AG, in the ground floor reception area, from 10am to 4pm
- Queens Crescent Library, 165 Queen's Crescent, NW5 4HH, from 11am to 4pm
During these sessions we can help you:
- to submit an online application form
- with documents to support your application
- make enquiries about an existing application

You can bring a friend, relative or professional to act as your advocate or representative. They can help you understand what's happening and make sure your voice is heard. Find out more about our advocacy policy, including our policy on unreasonable behaviour.
Vehicles
Our vehicles:
- have a maximum speed limit of 4mph
- are capable of a maximum 10 mile round trip
- can only be used on the pavement, not the road
- cannot carry passengers
- should not be driven in bad weather
- do not require a driving licence
Our scooters have baskets on the front for carrying luggage or shopping.
Vehicle training
Before we can give you a vehicle, you need to be shown how to use it safely.
You’ll complete a training session where you'll try out using a vehicle. Our trained professionals will help you feel confident and safe when using our vehicles.
Once training has been successfully completed, you'll be awarded membership.
Book a vehicle
If your application is successful, you'll receive a confirmation letter that you've joined the ScootAbility Scheme.
You'll be given the phone number to make a booking. You need to book vehicles at least 24 hours in advance, and they must be returned within 7 days.
