Paying your rent and bills

New tenants

During the first 6 months of your tenancy, you’ll be offered extra support from a Tenant Income Officer. They will contact you during your tenancy sign up or immediately after you move in. If any rent issues come up, they’ll work with you to sort them out.

Paying for Council Tax

You must register for Council Tax at your new address, as it’s a separate charge. You may be eligible for Council Tax Support if you’re on a low income.

Tell the benefits service you’ve moved

If you’re a new tenant and receive benefits, you must tell the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) that you’ve moved.

If you received Housing Benefit at your previous address, tell us about your change of address.

If you need to claim for the first time, you can apply for Universal Credit. If you’re of pension age and living in specified or temporary accommodation, you may be able to apply for Housing Benefit.

If you’re not sure if you qualify for benefits, our benefits team can help. Call 020 7974 4444 or visit benefits and financial support.

Paying for water, gas and electricity

You’ll need to set up and pay for water, electricity and heating separately as your rent does not include these bills.

Water

You’re responsible for your water bills, and you should contact Thames Water to set up your account and pay your water bills directly. Call their customer line on 0800 980 8800.

Electricity and gas

If your home does not have communal heating, you’ll need to choose your own gas and electricity supplier and pay them directly for your usage.

If your home has communal heating, a fixed weekly charge is included in your rent.

How to save energy

If you need help with energy saving to reduce your bills you can:

Ending your tenancy
