Fire door checks in council buildings

We have a legal duty to check fire doors in all buildings over 11 metres (or 5 storeys) This means we check:

  • flat entrance fire doors (FEDs) once a year
  • communal fire doors every 3 months

Report a fire door problem

If a fire door is damaged or does not close properly, report the issue for repair. We’ll send someone to fix it.

Flat entrance fire door checks

If your flat is in a building over 11 metres tall, the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 require us to carry out an annual inspection of your front door. You’ll receive a letter to let you know the inspection date.

How to rearrange an inspection

You can change the day of the fire door inspection by calling 020 7974 6545 or emailing [email protected]. It’s helpful if you give us at least 48 hours notice.

What to expect from your fire door inspection

The inspection takes about 10 minutes and the inspector will need access to both sides of your front door and frame. They check that your door is in good condition and closes properly to stop the spread of smoke and fire.

If we find a problem, we’ll arrange a time for a contractor to fix it.

Communal fire door checks

In buildings over 11 metres tall, we check communal fire doors every 3 months, as required by the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022.

How you can help

You should always keep communal fire doors closed.

Do not make changes to your front door if it’s a fire door - this includes adding a cat flap or removing self-closers.
