Letter from the leader of the council - Business rates 2026 to 2027
Dear Business Rates Payer,
Our local businesses are at the heart of life in our borough. We know times are tough, and we’re committed to working with you – listening, responding and providing the support you need to thrive. Because when our local businesses flourish, everyone in our borough benefits.
From 1 April 2026, your Business Rates may increase following a national property revaluation and updated multipliers. We know this will be a concern for you and we will support you through these changes.
Government sets the multipliers that are used to calculate your Business Rates bill. From April 2026 there will be five multipliers, depending on your property type and rateable value:
• £500,000 or more: 50.8p
• Retail, Hospitality and Leisure: Under £51,000: 38.2p; £51,000–£499,999: 43p
• Other businesses under £500,000: Under £51,000: 43.2p; £51,000–£499,999: 48p
If your rateable value has increased, transitional relief may limit your bill increases in 2026/27 to 5% (under £28,000); 15% (£28,001–£100,000); 30% (over £100,000). If you lose Small Business Rate Relief due to a higher valuation, you may be eligible for Supporting Small Business Relief, which caps increases at £800 in 2026. Government have also announced a new Pubs and Live Music Relief scheme which will give eligible businesses a 15% discount on their Business Rates bill. Search ‘Pubs and Live Music Relief scheme’ to check eligibility and find out more.
The Mayor of London has announced that from April 2026, the Business Rate Supplement will apply only to properties with a rateable value above £92,000 (up from £75,000). The charge will remain at 2p in the pound.
Visit business-rates for more information on business rates, exemptions and reliefs. To understand how the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) determined the rateable value of your property and to appeal that valuation if you disagree with it, GOV.UK find business rates.
Thank you for all you do for our local economy. We’re committed to supporting your business through these changes and helping our community thrive together.
Best wishes,
Councillor Richard Olszweski
