Accessible voting
We want to make sure that everyone in Camden can exercise their democratic right to vote. A wide selection of accessibility tools and materials is available to support you.
Accessible polling stations
- Ramps – providing ramps where needed, to improve accessibility at the polling station
- Doorbells - if the doors cannot be kept open or are not accessible, ring the doorbell and staff will help you or take you to an alternative entrance
Support inside the polling station
Every polling station has tools and materials to help you vote independently. These will be set out on a table next to the staff working at the polling station.
They include:
- Large, print ballot paper– a large, printed copy of the ballot paper that you can take into the booth to help you read the candidate names in the order they appear on the ballot paper
- Audio recording of the ballot paper – a QR code you can scan to listen to an audio recording of the ballot paper. You will need a smartphone to scan the QR code. If you need help using the QR code, polling station staff can help support you. If you do not have a smartphone, polling station staff can read the ballot paper to you
- Magnifiers – to help you enlarge any text on the ballot paper
- Tactile voting device – a device with braille that fits over the ballot paper and helps you mark your vote independently
- Wheelchair-accessible booth – every polling station has a low-level booth that is accessible for wheelchair users
- Pencil grips – to make pencils easier to hold
- Chairs – available for anyone who needs them
Companion or polling station staff help
At the polling station, you can ask a companion to help you vote, or request assistance from polling station staff. Anyone who helps you must complete a declaration confirming who they are.
If you need any further help inside the polling station, please ask our polling station staff who will be happy to help you.
Help for blind or partially sighted voters using postal votes
If you are registered to vote by post, you will receive your ballot paper before the election. This allows you to vote on the ballot paper at home and return it to us. Someone at home can help you and we can also offer other assistance.
Postal vote waiver
If you cannot provide a signature or your signature is not consistent, you can apply for a waiver by contacting us at [email protected]. This allows you to return your postal vote pack without a signature.
Tactile voting device
This device with braille that fits over the ballot paper and helps you mark your vote independently. We can send you a tactile voting device before you receive a postal vote pack.
Large print copy ballot paper
We can send you a large-print copy of the ballot paper to help you read the candidate names. Marks on this enlarged copy do not count as your vote. You must mark your actual ballot paper.
Audio ballot paper
Before each election, an audio version of the ballot paper is available at Camden Elections.
Assistance session
The week before each election we hold an assistance session at Camden Town Hall. We can help you complete your postal vote or show you how to use any of the available aids. If you’re interested in joining this session, please contact us at [email protected].
